Old Monkey Stories Episode 5/50 - Racism

After seeing Smaïn one man show, I went with "MC" to take a drink, so we started talking about the themes aborded in this nice show, and we aborded racism, and as usual "MC" remembered an Old Monkey "RPD" Story. So, here is that story as reported by "MC", just for you, The Old Monkey Stories Funs ;)
"As "WISHCOM" is an international company, we got often visitors from Africain countries, they came essentially for training, and "RPD" was the responsible for making copies of their passports, that's all. And during the rare moments he was in touch with our guests, he always used "Tu" and he was angry when they talk to him using "Tu". Here I must take a deep breath, make a pause and explain some french gramatical rules:

Tu vs Vous
French Subject Pronouns

There are two different words for you in French: tu and vous. There are even verbs for them: tutoyer means to call someone tu and vouvoyer means to call someone vous. They are not interchangeable, so it is very important to understand when and why to use each of them. Otherwise, you may inadvertantly insult someone by using the wrong you.

Tu is the familiar you. It demonstrates a certain closeness and informality. Use tu when speaking to a

  • friend
  • peer / colleague
  • relative
  • child
  • pet

Vous is the formal and plural you. It is used to show respect or maintain a certain distance / formality with any person. In addition, vous is always used when you are talking to more than one person (or thing). Use vous when speaking to

  • someone you don't know well
  • an older person
  • an authority figure
  • anyone to whom you wish to show respect
  • two or more people, animals, etc.
Some people follow the guideline of using whatever the other person uses with them. This can be misleading: someone in authority may use tu with you, but that certainly doesn't mean that you can respond in kind. When in doubt, I tend to use vous. I'd rather show someone too much respect than not enough!

So considering the relationship between "RPD" and our African customers, you can guess that it's better to talk to them using "Vous" rather than "Tu", as we must show them our consideration and respect, making their stay as troubles free as possible, cause without this south-south collaboration, we can be sure that "RPD" will stay at home washing the dishes while his wife is working in her office. But what surprised me the most is "RPD" declaration trying to explain his attitude, he said that he's racist and has problem with blacks. I just wanted to say to this ass hole "RPD" to stop his bullshit, and that he has a big chance leaving in non european country otherwise, a big chance he's living now in a prison washing the WC while his wife is working in her office. By the way Mr "RPD", what if you could more human, what if you can be open mind to understand that your bad attitude has bad effects on you and on the persons around you and for the company you're working for, I mean our dear "WISHCOM"!"
NB: This is fiction and any resemblance with existing people or situations could be only fortuitous.
